In 1860, on the heels of the Post Office Department’s request for stamp printers Toppan, Carpenter, & Casilear to produce a 30¢ stamp, the POD set their sights on having them develop a 90¢ design. This was the highest denomination and the last stamp produced under the 1851 contract. (One of the original colors suggested by the POD for this stamp was pink!)
This item is a brown-orange trial color plate proof on wove, with portions of adjacent stamps visible at top and right. Minuscule ms. “3” in upper LH corner. Previously hinged. It would make a wonderful companion with a copy of the actual stamp or an issued-color proof. SCV $625.
