Extraordinary size and design. Photo essay of the $2 frame with the vignette used for the 2¢ stamp of the Trans-Mississippi series. Illustrated in Brazer’s handbook on the Trans-Mississippi essays. Those familiar with these stamps will notice that the label reads “Harvesting in the West,” which was eventually changed to “Farming in the West” for the stamp as issued.
Close examination reveals that lines and dots forming the ground extend into the frame design on all sides. Brazer discussed this in his handbook, noting that converting the originally intended 2-color printings into single color stamps required trimming down the vignettes. Such overlap was suitable for 2-color printing to help mask misregistration, but not for a single color stamp. The large size of this essay makes the issue readily apparent without the need for magnification.
