These essays reflect the BEP’s original intentions of producing bi-colored stamps with colored frames and black vignettes. It’s almost unnecessary to point out the richness of the colors used to print the frames.

The decision to print the stamps in single colors was accompanied by a design change for the 2¢ and $2 denominations: their vignettes were swapped. Thus, the famous “Farming in the West” vignette originally intended for the $2 stamp was used for the 2¢ denomination. This was done to promote Westward expansion, the imagery more likely to be seen on more frequently used 2¢ stamps than $2 stamps.

This is a full set of essays on reduced card, with a few proofs exhibiting light stains. Priced accordingly at a savings of over $2,000 of  Scott retail (SCV $6,750).
