Green and black on green paper with red serial numbers. Frames printed by American Bank Note Co., black portions by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
Why are there two 40 gallon stamps of the Series of 1875? Here I paraphrase Ron Lesher, who cataloged these stamps: “…objection to the portrait of then current President Grant caused such a furor that the American Bank Note Company replaced his portrait with that Lincoln.”
