An out-of-the-ordinary check. First, it was used as a make-shift invoice payable to one Robert Wyghtley, apparently for digging shafts in the Egyptian Mine. The notation reads:
8 shft – 2 1/2 shift – .60¢ cash
12 ft – Deft 2 1/2 ft – 1
Wyghtley was illiterate, the check is endorsed with an X (“his mark”) on the back of the check. After he made his mark, someone wrote Whyghtlye’s full name over it.
