A great grouping of Downer & Bemis checks with different RN imprints. While most examples of Downer & Bemis checks are soiled and have some degree of paper damage, these have been spared from the latter (see note about RN-G1). Each checks is also listed individually, so this grouping will only be offered while all four checks are still available.
RN-C1 (1871) — curved text for “Office of Downer & Bemis Brewing Co.” Hand-written check number.
RN-E4 (1873) — with straight text for “Office of…” and italics for “Treasurer.” Same vignette, but font styles are slightly different than the Type C.
RN-D1 (1874) — here things get more interesting. Compared with the vignettes of the two earlier checks, there are several differences between the buildings, and the train was removed from the foreground.
RN-G1 (1883) — another alteration of the vignette, notably the Ice House, the gate to the front area, people in front of the wall, and so on. Unlike the others, this was printed by Western Bank Note Co. No indication for “Treasurer,” and a different signatory. And in very faint type above the company name is printed “Bemis & McAvoy Brewing Co.”, presumably the successor firm. Bottom edge tear into imprint with old-time repair.
