This document sports a succession of Type A imprints, one full and 56 partial, stacked vertically on a large documents. Folded in half, as acquired (see back scan).
These documents were used in a NYC accounting house in the 1860s where representatives of 50+ banks would get together weekly and settle accounts between them. The document serves as a receipt for each of the 57 transactions conducted, thus each entry was taxed the 2¢ receipt tax then in effect.
This example is trimmed down from the full document but shows all of the bank names. This “cut square” version is recognized and listed in Castenholz and Scott. In its folded state it fits nicely into a standard check sleeve, the kind I provide with all check purchases, and thus won’t take up a lot of room in an album. Copies of the full, untrimmed documents typically sell for $750. Please note that all copies of tapeworm documents are stained or have scorch marks on the left edge.
Corner crease, small faults.
