Farm Animals
American Bank Note Company Scenic Die Proofs

• Sheep and Shepard [Untitled]

• “Killing Hogs” (Die 173)

• “Molly” (Die 798)

Provenance: The William A. Keegan family scrapbook, spanning 1860 to ca. 1903. Three members of the Keegan family worked for the American Bank Note Company, one of whom was employed as a plate printer.

Page measures 12″ x 9 3/8″.

Sheep Vignette

Bears the imprint of Baldwin, Bald & Cousland. An 1858 copyright inscription is rendered in minute text below the scene.

“Killing Hogs”

According to Gene Hessler (“The Engraver’s Line”), this vignette was engraved by Owen G. Hanks after an illustration by Francis W. Edmonds, and used for a $100 note for the Bank of Louisiana, New Orleans. The scene features two men, one African-American, butchering a hog. ABNC inscription.

“Molly”

The last proof on the page depicts Molly the cow. ABNC inscription.

Condition & Returns: The top edge of the sheep scene has some mild discoloration that seems to have been ‘inherited’ from the paper on which it’s mounted, and what might be a light glue stain on the face from when it was added to the album. The other two proofs are in excellent condition. Please examine the individual 600 dpi scans of each proof. The page itself is brittle with minor edge faults. Due to the fragile nature of this item, returns cannot be accommodated.
