#72 Forgery
90¢ 1861 Design

A remarkably good old-time forgery of #72, with frame detail quite close to the original. It was purchased at one of the big New York stamp shows back in the late 1990s and has been off the market ever since. Fully gummed with dark brown mucilage, gum with two small bare spots. Overall XF+ condition.
In its own right, it embodies a key characteristic of the “Premiere Gravure” (First Design) of the 90¢ stamp — the absence of dashes in the triangular apex of the frame found in the finalized design. See the second image for comparison with an actual copy of the 90¢ First Design.
We have located one other example being offered for sale at this time, priced at $300 with small faults.
