An extraordinary pairing — an 1857 engraved bank draft with a beautiful vignette of running horses, and a proof of the vignette itself.
Check (Bank Draft)
Banking House of Mackoy & Quinby, Monmouth, IL.
Black on thin semi-transparent paper. Major vignette of running horses, minor vignette of a young woman shielding her eyes from the sun. Scan shown on white and black backgrounds for contrast. Inscriptions of engravers Baldwin, Bald & Cousland (NY) and Bald, Cousland & Co. (Phila). Typical spindle cut, unobtrusive and nicely healed, save for a minute spot of paper loss. Very light creases predominantly visible only on the back. Negligible toning spot and very light stain mentioned for accuracy.
American Bank Note Company Archives Proof
Black on proof paper printed from the original die. Brown backing with printed die number excerpted from an ABNC file folder which at one time contained information about the die. The above-named engraving firms eventually merged into ABNC, hence ABNC’s possession of the die. Light mounting stains, tiny paper imperfections. Rare and unique in this format.
