A rare offering, missing from most collections of Loewenberg decalcomanias.

This experimental printing of the 1861 10¢ stamp was produced according to Henry Loewenberg’s patented process for producing decal stamps. Aimed at preventing postage stamp reuse, his patent described the manufacture of “self-canceling” stamps, whereby soaking a stamp would prevent it from being used a second time. Being a decal, soaking or even peeling the stamp from an envelope would leave the printed image behind, if not destroy it.

This is a plate essay, with large margins that include about 1/3 of an adjacent stamp. Ink flaking typical of Loewenberg decals.

SCV for examples on pale rose paper with minimal ink loss is $250. Priced accordingly, despite its rarity.
