National Bank Note Company
1868 for the 1869 Contract
$750.00
Ex-Brazer
Die essay on India, cut to stamp size. This essay reflects National Bank Note Company’s original concept for the 90¢ stamp, engraved as a “unified die” integrating the small numeral frame and Washington portrait. There exists no corollary die essay with Lincoln’s portrait.
This essay can be traced to the 1990 Clarence Brazer sale (Robert. A. Siegel) in which the color was described as “dull violet” — a shade not accounted for in Scott or in Brazer’s own catalog.
The second image presents the essay in an approval card, mounted but unattached to an archival paper background.
Thin, toning from previous mounting.
SCV $2000 as die on India, die sunk on card.
