American Bank Note Company Vignette Die Proof
“Charity No. 2”

Black on India on Card
Die 723

Provenance: The William A. Keegan family scrapbook, spanning 1856 to ca. 1903. Three members of the Keegan family worked for the American Bank Note Company, one of whom was employed as a plate printer.

Description: A sensitively and marvelously rendered allegorical scene. The baby being held by the woman holds a ribbon reading “Charity.” American Bank Note Company imprint and die number at bottom.

The proof was trimmed from a brittle, brown page of the Keegan album. Card toning inherited from the paper has not affected the India. Card is ever so slightly buckled, as was the album page it was mounted to, but nevertheless presents extremely well.
