A Rarely Seen Stamp
Green and black on violet silk paper, red serial numbers, Zachary Taylor portrait. Frame printed by Continental Bank Note Co., with “TAX PAID STAMP” inscriptions prominent at top and bottom of the frame. Black portions were printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
An unused, punched remainder. Old-time concealment of punches in the stamp portion, where the area behind “GALLONS” was backed with white paper and missing portions of the lettering filled in. That’s how they did things years ago.
